Abstract

We live in the age of popular self-representation in that most people around the globe either produce or consume autobiographical material: memoirs, selfies, blogs, etc. The current volume investigates this global phenomenon and examines how life writing and world literature converge. (Helga Lenart-Cheng, Ioana Luca: Life Writing as World Literature. Introduction. In: Helga Lenart-Cheng (Hg.), Ioana Luca (Hg.): Life Writing as World Literature. London: Bloomsbury, 2025, S. 1.)

Social media highlight not only the performative nature of autobiographical acts, but also their relational and collaborative aspects and the role of the audience, whether composed of one person or millions. Even though these aspects have always been a staple feature of autobiographical writing, the last two decades have seen a strong inclination of acts of self-representation towards self-performance and self-invention. Furthermore, due to the democratizing effect of the internet, even people without celebrity status can now perform their self almost continuously, addressing potentially large audiences. (Zuzana Fonioková , Jarmila Mildorf: Performing Selves in the 21st Century: Introduction. In: Partial Answers. Journal of Literature and the History of Ideas. Bd. 23, 2. 2025, S. 191–201, S. 193.)
